NASA’s Voyager 1 has left our planetary neighborhood, and it’s not coming back. Scientists who work on the mission have reported that the spacecraft moved outside the sprawling bubble of electrically charged particles spewed by the sun. It marks the first time a human-built spacecraft has explored a mysterious region known as interstellar space.
“This is the beginning of a new era of exploration for us,” Edward Stone told Science News. Stone is a space scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He’s been in charge of the Voyager mission since 1972. “For the first time, we are exploring interstellar space.” Voyager 1 will continue to collect information from this unexplored region, which is packed with fast-moving particles from distant stars and supernovas.
The spacecraft, about the size of a small car, has been headed out since it launched in 1977. It was originally designed to visit the outer planets. Its tour included an approach to Jupiter in March 1979 and a flyby of Saturn in November 1980. On Valentine’s Day in 1990, Voyager 1’s camera took its last image: a portrait of the solar system. After that, its cameras shut off to conserve energy so that it could continue to transmit data back home. Stone and his coworkers estimate that Voyager 1 has about seven more years of exploration left. In 2020 they’ll have to start shutting off the spacecraft’s instruments, though scientists expect to still be in contact with it until 2025.
Scientists have disagreed about when the spacecraft officially exited the solar bubble. In part, that’s because they don’t have good information about what happens way out there. They do know that the sun sends out a stream of charged particles called plasma. This is the solar wind, and it creates a bubble that stretches billions of kilometers (hundreds of millions of miles) in all directions. Astronomers call this bubble the heliosphere.
An instrument onboard Voyager 1 measures those charged particles coming from the sun. In July 2012, Voyager 1 entered a region where their number dropped. Over the next few weeks, the particle count rose and dropped three more times. Then, on August 25, 2012, there were no more particles from the sun detected. At that point, many scientists declared that Voyager 1 had left the heliosphere.
But not Stone. He wanted more evidence before declaring Voyager 1 gone for good. So using data from another onboard instrument and some creative calculations, Stone and his coworkers continued to study the particles surrounding the spacecraft. They found that Voyager 1 had gone somewhere new. Some particles still surrounded the spacecraft, but they were packed together much more tightly than in solar plasma. That showed Voyager 1 had moved into interstellar space, Stone and his coworkers reported September 12 in Science.
“The study very definitively shows that we’re in the interstellar medium,” Gary Zank told Science News. A space physicist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Zank was not involved in the research.
Other scientists disagree. Skeptics include a few researchers who work with Stone. One is George Gloeckler, a space scientist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He wants more evidence. Scientists will have it, he says — and soon. In two or three years, a spacecraft called Voyager 2, launched two weeks before Voyager 1, will arrive in the same general region. Unlike Voyager 1, Voyager 2’s instruments can better measure the sun’s plasma and solve the debate once and for all.
“Voyager 2 will experimentally answer this question,” Gloeckler told Science News. “Why rush to conclusions now?”

On July 26, 2010, people living along Talmadge Creek in Marshall, Mich., awoke to a sharp, sickening smell. Those who followed their noses to the creek witnessed an environmental horror.
The water flowed black and shiny. It coated turtles and waterfowl with a smelly goo. It transformed grasses and bushes along the banks from green to oily black.
Eyes watered and throats burned as people breathed in the fumes. Some developed headaches and felt sick to their stomachs.
"It was like something from a science fiction movie. It was creepy," recalls Paul Makoski.
Makoski is director of environmental health with Michigan’s Calhoun County Public Health Department, in Battle Creek. He was one of the first people to check out the creek that day. As he and others would soon learn, oil had been spilling from a rupture in a nearby oil pipeline since the night before.
A part of Enbridge Inc., a Canadian company based in Calgary, Alberta, owns the pipeline. And it hadn’t realized right away that there was a problem. By the time engineers closed the pipeline valves to end the spill, an estimated 3.2 million liters (843,000 gallons) had leaked into Talmadge Creek.
The oil flowed into the nearby Kalamazoo River. From there it moved onward toward Lake Michigan, one of North America’s Great Lakes. While the oil didn't make it as far as that lake, the spill did contaminate nearly 65 kilometers (40 miles) of waterways.
And as workers cleaning up the mess later discovered, this was no ordinary oil. This was diluted bitumen.
"It's a new kind of oil that we don't have much experience with," says Stephen Hamilton. An aquatic ecologist at Michigan State University, in East Lansing, he helped advise Enbridge and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the cleanup. The chemicals that make up bitumen are different from those in ordinary crude oil, explains Hamilton, so “it behaves differently."
Since the Marshall accident, scientists have been studying the spilled bitumen’s effects on people who were exposed to its fumes and to portions of the environment touched by the oil. They’ve learned some important lessons. Among them: Bitumen can sink in water, making it especially hard to clean up.
Yet there is plenty that the experts still don't know. And that worries Makoski and other researchers who work to protect people and the environment.
Like ‘peanut butter’ 
Pipelines carrying oil and natural gas crisscross North America. With Alberta's bitumen production expected to more than double in the next 10 years, more pipelines will be carrying this unusual oil than ever before.
The good news: A June 2013 report concluded that diluted bitumen isn't any more likely than other types of oil to trigger bursts in pipelines. This report was issued by the U.S. National Research Council in Washington, D.C. The group provides independent advice about science, engineering and medicine to government agencies and other organizations.
But pipeline and other spills do occur. And when the spills involve diluted bitumen, they can pose a more serious problem, some scientists argue.
Natural bitumen is a type of extra-heavy crude oil. In fact, deposits of it are often referred to as tar sands or oil sands. As an oil, it doesn’t flow like the light crude pumped up from reservoirs under Texas, the Middle East, Europe’s North Sea or the Gulf of Mexico. It flows more like peanut butter. That means it doesn't really flow at all.
Northern Alberta boasts the world’s largest known bitumen deposits. It was the source of the oil that spilled in Marshall.
As it comes out of the ground, bitumen is extremely viscous, which means it's thick and sticky. The reason has to do with heat and hungry bacteria.
All oil consists of a complex mix of molecules containing carbon and hydrogen (units known as hydrocarbons), explains Merv Fingas in Edmonton, Alberta. Now retired, this oil spill expert used to work for Environment Canada, a federal agency. In bitumen, those molecules are bigger than they are in the so-called conventional oil from which refiners make most of the gasoline that powers cars and the heating oil that warms many homes.
Both bitumen and conventional oil began their lives as microscopic plants and animals. They lived in Earth’s seas millions of years ago. As the organisms died, they drifted to the bottom. Over the eons, those remains became buried beneath layers of other decaying plants and animals — and by sand and clay.
Over many millions of years, pressure from all those layers built up. That caused the plant and animal remains to heat and break down — or decay. Eventually, chemical reactions in this hot stew cooked up what geologists refer to as crude oil and natural gas.
But in the case of bitumen, temperatures never got high enough to kill the bacteria that eat hydrocarbons.
So the bacteria feasted. But they are picky eaters. They ate only small molecules, leaving behind the big ones that make bitumen so viscous.
Making bitumen flow 
Bitumen's viscosity and the fact it is mixed with so much sand and clay make it difficult — and therefore expensive — to get out of the ground. So until recently, energy companies focused on extracting conventional oil. They ignored bitumen.
But no longer. Much of the oil that was easy and inexpensive both to extract and to process has been used. Meanwhile, demand for oil-based products continues to grow. These trends have prompted oil companies to begin extracting bitumen.
In some places, bitumen can be mined. But in Alberta, most of that super-heavy oil is too deep to scoop out with backhoes. So engineers inject steam into the ground. This heating reduces the bitumen’s viscosity. Now a fluid, they can pump it out.
Once the bitumen reaches the surface and cools, however, it becomes thick and tarry again. Before engineers can make it flow through pipelines, they must dilute it with solvents. These lighter-weight hydrocarbons dissolve into and mix with the bitumen. In the process, they make the oil runnier, much as adding water will thin pancake batter, making it easier to stir and to pour onto a griddle.
Engineers refer to this less viscous mix of diluted bitumen as dilbit, for short.
Sometimes the added solvent is a complex substance known as gas condensate. Gas condensate remains a liquid as long as the oil it accompanies flows through a pipeline.
But as scientists in Marshall learned, the solvent evaporates, or changes from a liquid to a gas, once bitumen leaks from a pipeline.
That solvent can contain benzene, a gas that can cause cancer. After the Marshall spill, benzene hovered over Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River for a few days before drifting away.
The spill’s damage
Benzene levels never got high enough for health officials to order Michigan residents to leave their homes. But going out on the river to check on wildlife was initially impossible, recalls Jay Wesley. He’s a fisheries biologist with Michigan's Department of Natural Resources in Plainwell.
"Our crews wanted to get out on the water but had to be pulled back," he says. "It took three or four days before we could get on the river because of high levels of benzene in the air."
When Wesley and his team finally did make it onto the river, they found turtles, geese, ducks, herons and muskrats coated in oil.


The Pentagon plans to sell $10.8 billion worth of advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The hardware includes bunker buster bombs and cruise missiles.
 
The planned deal includes shipping 1,000 GBU-39/B bombs to Saudi Arabia and 5,000 to the UAE, AFP reports. They have air-deployed wings, which allow them to strike targets as far away as 110km. Their warheads can penetrate up to a meter of reinforced concrete.
 
The planned sale also includes sophisticated Standoff Land Attack Extended Range (SLAM-ER) and Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW) cruise missiles. Both are meant for destroying surface targets from a long distance, allowing warplanes to stay out of the range of enemy air defenses.
 
The Saudis will purchase 650 of the Boeing-manufactured SLAM-ERs and 973 Raytheon-made JSOWs, as well as other missiles. They are to pay $6.8 billion for the hardware, parts, training and logistical support.
 
The United Arab Emirates is due to buy $4 billion worth of weaponry, including the bunker buster bombs, 300 SLAM-ERs and 1,200 JSOW missiles.
 
The planned deal will be the first time the U.S. delivers the sophisticated gliding bombs and missiles to the region.
 
Back in April, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced plans to sell $10 billion worth of arms to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. This week’s announcement details the munitions that the Persian Gulf monarchies are seeking.
 
DoD officials informed the Congress of the planned deal last week. Legislators have 30 days to block the sale, but this is unlikely to happen considering the U.S.’ previous weapon deals with its Persian Gulf allies.
 
In 2011, the U.S. signed a $29.4 billion deal with Saudi Arabia to sell 84 Boeing-made F-15 jets and upgrade 70 planes already owned by the kingdom. The Obama administration has also sold the UAE an anti-missile system called the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense.

Bhubaneswar/ Visakhapatnam: Heavy rain in the aftermath of Cyclone Phailin triggered floods in Odisha on Monday with over 2.5 lakh people being marooned in Balasore -- one of the two worst hit districts along with Mayurbanj-- and several rivers were in spate.
As massive relief works moved into top gear after the storm that hit the eastern coast in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Saturday night left a trail of destruction, mainly in the eastern state, the situation due to floods caused by cyclone induced rainfall in the two districts was described by an official as critical.
A cargo ship was also presumed sunk in rough seas caused by the cyclone off the coast of West Bengal but its crew of 17 Chinese nationals and an Indonesian were rescued on Monday, Coast Guard sources said in Kolkata. Major rivers like Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha are in spate following sudden inflow of water, according to Odisha Special Relief Commissioner P K Mohapatra.
Bhadrak district was also affected while flood fury loomed large over Ganjam district, the worst hit by the cyclone. Teams from Army, Navy and IAF besides NDRF and ODRAF were deployed for rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas in Odisha.
The death toll in the impact of the cyclone rose to 27 with four people being killed in the floods in Mayurbanj and Bhadrak districts. Phailin has dissipated but the heavy rains and floods in its aftermath is a cause of concern, a minister from Odisha said.
"We are starting air-dropping of food packets in Balasore district immediately ... The flood situation in the district is a cause of concern," state revenue and disaster management minister S N Patro said.
Mohapatra said the flood situation in Balalsore district was 'critical' with flood waters of Budhabalang river inundating villages in Remuna, Balasore sadar, Jaleswar and Bhograi blocks.
Patro said besides flooding the four blocks in Balasore, Budhabalang has also inundated 10 blocks in neighbouring Mayurbhanj district. Besides Baripada, the district headquarter town of Mayurbhanj, Betanati and Badasahi blocks have been severely hit in the floods.
Hundreds of thousands of people who fled the country's strongest cyclone in 14 years also returned home to scenes of devastation, as rescue teams started repairing flooded towns, tangled power lines and tens of thousands of destroyed thatch homes.
In Andhra Pradesh, officials said rescue and relief operations were in full swing and they expect normalcy to be restored in cyclone-hit Srikakulam district in a couple of days.

New Delhi: Twelve million people along India's eastern coast face mass disruption as a powerful cyclone bears down on the region in the next 24 hours, the head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NMDA) said on Friday.
Meteorologists predict Phailin could be the most catastrophic storm to hit India in 14 years, when a super cyclone pounded Odisha, leaving 10,000 people dead.
Now in the Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Phailin is forecast to reach the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states on Saturday evening, bringing gale-force winds, lashing rains, storm surges and widespread flooding.
"The affected populations ... should be about 1.2 crores (12 million)," Shashidhar Reddy, the NMDA's vice-chairman told a news conference.
Mass evacuations are underway and around 300,000 people living in coastal villages have so far been moved to cyclone shelters and schools built on elevated areas, he said, adding that extensive damage to crops, property and roads was expected.
The Indian army, navy and air force are also on standby and 1,600 members of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in districts such as Ganjan, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram, which lie directly in the path of storm. India's disaster preparedness has improved dramatically in recent years, and aid workers praised precautions taken by
authorities for Phailin such as early warning, pre-positioning of rations in shelters and orderly evacuations.
But they warn that preparations could be tested by Phailin's predicted wind speeds of more than 315 kph (196 mph) and wave surges that some forecasts say could reach 6 metres (20 feet).

Ichapuram/Bhubaneswar: Rain and wind lashed India's east coast on Saturday, forcing about 450,000 people to flee to shelters as one of the country's largest cyclones closed in, threatening to cut a swathe of devastation through farmland and fishing hamlets. Filling most of the Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Phailin was about 90km (124 miles) off the coast by late afternoon and was expected to strike the coast by nightfall with winds of between 210kmph (130mph) and 220kmph (137mph). The storm was expected to affect 12 million people, most of them in the densely populated states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, weather and disaster management officials said.
Even before landfall, coconut trees in villages along the coast were bent and broken in the gusting wind. Electrical poles were brought down and roads were littered with debris. In the first reported deaths, two people were killed by falling trees while a third when the walls of her mud house collapsed. Terrified children clung to their mothers as they sought shelter. Most towns along the coast were deserted but there were still some people trying to flee.
Some people took refuge in temples, others crammed into three-wheel auto-rickshaws and headed inland. "This is one of the largest evacuations undertaken in India," said Shashidhar Reddy, vice chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority, who estimated that more than 440,000 people had fled from their homes. The size of the storm made extensive damage to property more likely, he told reporters in New Delhi. "Our priority is to minimise loss of life."
Phailin is expected to bring a 3.4-metre (11-foot) surge in sea levels when it hits the coast between 1230 GMT and 1430 GMT. The weather department warned of extensive damage to mud houses, major disruption of power and communication lines, and the flooding of rail tracks and roads. Flying debris is another threat. "In a storm of this magnitude there is the potential for widespread damage to crops and livestock in the low-lying coastal areas and houses completely wiped away," said Kunal Shah, the head of the aid group World Vision's emergency response team in India. "While we are praying this storm loses intensity, we're also preparing."
London-based Tropical Storm Risk classed the storm in Category 5 - the strongest such rating. The US navy's weather service said wind at sea was gusting at 314kmph. Many of the people along the coast are subsistence fishermen and farmers, who live in mud-and-brick or thatched huts. In 1999, a typhoon battered the same region, killing 10,000 people.
India's disaster preparations have improved significantly since then and aid workers praised precautions for Phailin such as early warnings, stocking of rations in shelters and evacuations. "A lot has been learnt since 1999 and my guess is that while there could be extensive damage to property and crops, the death toll will be much less," said G. Padmanabhan, emergency analyst at the U.N. Development Programme. But despite all the warnings, some people refused to leave their homes.
"I have a small child, so I thought, how will I leave?" asked Achamma, 25, as she clutched on to her boy in Donkuru, a fishing village in Andhra Pradesh, as waves crashed on to a nearby beach. Police said a rescue had been launched for 18 fishermen stranded at sea off Paradip, a major port in Odisha, after their trawler ran out of fuel. Paradip halted cargo operations on Friday. All vessels were ordered to leave the port, which handles coal, crude oil and iron ore. An oil tanker holding about 2 million barrels of oil, worth $220 million, was also moved, an oil company source said. However, the storm was not expected to hit India's largest gas field, the D6 natural gas block in the Cauvery Basin further down the east coast, field operator Reliance Industries said.

Washington: India is not facing any economic crisis and won't approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for funds in the next five years as the country has enough forex reserves, Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has said.
"There's no way we are close to being a country in financial or economic crisis...There's not a chance we will go to the IMF for money in the next five years," he said at a debate global economy on a private news channel.
The apex bank has taken a series of measures to strengthen rupee and promote growth.
Allaying fears of India not being able to meet its financial obligations, he said, "India's external debt to GDP is 22 per cent. 22 per cent of GDP is external debt and India's has reserve of USD 280 billion which is 15 per cent of GDP."
In other words, the country can pay three-fourth of its debt from its forex reserves, he said.
"Out of total short-term external debt that we have to pay for is 10 per cent of GDP. So, we have enough reserve to take care of that," he said speaking on the sidelines of the IMF meeting in Washington.
"We bought over $60 billion dollar gold last year. $60 billion accounts for three-fourth of our current account deficit. If the push comes to shove, we can pay the world in gold."
"We need to bring back growth now. But we're still doing better than a significant number of economies in the world," he said.
